The early morning sun streams through the window and I trace the outline of the black and white rose above Finnâs heart. It has exquisite detail, the shading of the open flower realistic. âDid you get this for your sister?â I ask, my finger tracing one of the petals.
He runs his hand down my back but doesnât open his eyes. âYeah, but itâs covering up a different tattoo I got when I was sixteen.â
âSixteen. Is that even legal?â
âI had a fake ID. And the place I got it wasnât exactly up to code.â
âI wonder what Papa would have said if Iâd come home with a tattoo at sixteen.â
Finn smiles as I gently draw a finger around one of the leaves. âThe original was a mess,â he says.
âWhat was it?â
âIt was meant to be a fleur-de-lis, but it came out looking like an anchor, and not in a good way.â
I try to imagine Finn as the type of sixteen-year-old who would get a tattoo with a fake ID. âI think we were very different teenagers,â I say.
He chuckles. âI donât doubt that.â
âDid you like school?â I ask.
âNo.â He opens his eyes and kisses my forehead. âI was a terrible student. What about you?â
âI always liked school. Well, the classes, that is. I hated the actual school I went to.â
âThe one in England, right?â He runs his hand up and down my arm. âHow come your parents sent you all the way over there?â
âItâs complicated,â I say, recalling that difficult time.
âYou donât need to talk about it if you donât want to.â
I attempt a smile. âItâs okay. I just havenât spoken about it to anyone in a long time.â Finn runs his fingers through my hair, the effect soothing. âMy parents sent my older brother, Gabe, to school in England first, wanting him to get the best education he could. It cost them a small fortune, but Papa said it was an investment. I suppose he was right since Gabe is successful. But he never came back.â
âWhere is he?â
âNew York. Working for a big, fancy law firm.â
Finn arches a brow. âImpressive.â
âMy parents definitely think so.â Iâm sure he can hear the bitterness in my voice. âIâve never been able to impress them myself.â
âBut you own your own business,â he says.
âYes, but Iâm not sure for how long.â
I feel Finnâs muscles tighten beneath me. âAdèle, Iâm sorry...â
âNo,â I say, meaning it. âIf my business fails then Iâm the only one to blame. My parents wanted me to stay in Paris, to start a company there. But Saint-Germain is my home. This is the only place I want to be.â
Finn brushes the hair off my forehead. âEngland must have felt really far.â
âI didnât want to go,â I admit. âWhen I found out theyâd enrolled me, I begged them to let me stay home. I didnât know anyone in England. I had no friends, no family there.â
âWhy send you, then?â
I stop tracing the rose. âBecause Papa had cancer.â
âShit, Iâm sorry.â
âThey hid it from Gabe and me for a long time.
